Land Use & Zoning Codes

Overview:

Before you secure a location, you'll want to know your Land Use Code and Zoning Code so that your business can be prepared for growth and any changes that may come your way. Knowing what you can do and not do with your location can change the way you structure your business.

Action Tools:

Get your “Land Use Code” before you secure your property. Look for “Zoning & Land Use Codes” information for where your attraction will be located. Most counties & cities have resources on their websites.
Figure out the “Zoning Code” of the property. Most common are Residential, Agricultural, Commercial, Industrial, Manufacturing.
Ask for specific dates & deadlines. Each department plays a specific role; make sure you know the timeline for each project so that you can open on time.
Go to your local “Land Use & Zoning Division” in person with this information. Explain the key points about your plan and be persistent on talking with the right person.
Ask for “Pre-approval Committee” paperwork. Submit your sketches, basic description of your business, and other information to win them over with your vision. Once approved, the committee will gather the other people you’ll need to talk with about your plan.
